Types of PET packaging tests you must know

PET packaging comes in different shapes and sizes and is made from a variety of materials depending on the product it is designed to protect. To determine whether or not the packaging is able to perform the desired function, each type requires an array of PET packaging tests.

Bursting Test

Varieties of beverages such as water, soda, and juice bottles, are packed in distinct shapes and sizes and undergoes multiple quality testing to analyse properties such as structural rigidity. It is conducted to make sure that the structure won’t rupture when filled or fold over when stacked. To ensure 100% protection, a burst test is performed to determine at which the point the bottle fails when filled with fluid.

Bottle Burst Tester is used to perform highly precise burst test on PET bottles with minimum pressure and check the volume expansion of test samples. It complies with various test standards such as ASTM C147-86 (2015).

  • Equipped with pneumatic pressure control
  • Strong clamping mechanism for performing tests
  • Auto pressure hold facility for maintaining pressure

Wall thickness test

In order to ensure that the PET bottles will go smoothly through the production lines without any measurement errors such as height, wall thickness dimensions are evaluated at various points to ensure consistency for structural integrity.

Magnamike 8600 – wall thickness gauge utilizes magnetic field method to make trusted and highly accurate measurements on nonferrous materials. The instrument supports plastic and glass bottles, packaging, automotive tear seams, aerospace and other similar products.

  • Measurement based on probe’s Hall Effect sensor
  • Expandable thickness range up to 25.4mm (1.00 in.)
  • Replaceable wear caps – standard and chisel type

Top load test

As bottles are often stacked on top of each other and shipped on pallets, a top-load test is required to test the rigidity and ensure if the bottle is able to withstand stacking forces or not.

Top Load Tester – digital cum computerized is a new generation semi-automatic motorized top load tester. It gives compressive buckling load in digital format as well as graphical report. The test sample is placed in between the inverted concave jaws for zero slip gripping.

  • Inverted straight plates for zero slip gripping support
  • 10 Sample reports can be seen on 1 report
  • Data output in graphical and digital display form.
