A muffle furnace is a heat treatment chamber that works on a very high-temperature range. It literally burns down the sample, so that organic compounds change into fumes. It is extremely heated chamber made up of ceramic, insulated completely to avoid any heat loss when in operation. The products which are to be tested does not come directly in contact with flames. Burning of the sample does not treat the sample in the way we want it to be. It is basically a laboratory machine and primarily used for testing of ash content in rubber and polymer. They are also known as retort furnace.
How does it work?
A muffle furnace is a very simple device to operate. It is a simple electrically operated oven with temperature range up to 1400°C. It has a heating coil with insulated material. The inside chamber is made up of ceramic. If chamber was made up of metal, it would have melted at such a high range. Ceramic has the capability to withstand high-temperature range.
