Polariscope – A Much Needed Instrument for Glass Industry

Polariscope – A Much Needed Instrument for Glass Industry

From industrial applications to domestic, glass products are widely used in ample of applications. Depending upon the applications, the quality is chosen and internal defects are tolerated. Glass blowers incorporate multiple techniques to get the end product free from defects. Despite huge efforts, there occur major or minor flaws. Multiple techniques like blowing, cooling, heating, etc. induce strain in the product. It can also be termed as internal stress.

How Can External Stress Develop Internal Strain in The Glass Objects?

Due to internal strain, the quality of glass gets the major impact. It is straightway considered as a flaw and goes under consideration. Any defect in the product generates weak points in the structure. Different types of defects like bubbles, haze, crystallinity, etc. are major factors that contribute in the making a structure weak. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to analyse all stress causing reasons.

How to Detect the Defects Using Polariscope?

Polariscope for glass defect identification is widely used in industries. It is an optical device and work simply on the principle of refraction of incident light through polaroid lenses. When an incident light is passed through a sample. It tends to follow a certain path of light without any refraction. If it encounters any defect, the light would refract doubly and create a birefringence pattern of light. The sample is observed at two angles, 45° and 90°. The pattern is observed carefully and matched with a defect chart to identify the type of defect.

Presto is the leading manufacturer and supplier of Polariscope for glass defects. Also, this machine can be used in the PET and preform industries to identify the defects. The instrument is made up of the highly durable body to give a long shelf life. The components like polaroid lenses and incident light are of very high quality. The machine can be made to move at different angles to make the observations. Presto also supplies standardised defect chart that is used to refer the birefringence patterns. The
pattern can be matched with the chart to identify the defect.
