Standard Method to Measure the Minimum O2 Concentration to Support Candle-Like Combustion of Plastics (Oxygen Index)
The standard method ASTM D2863 measures the minimum concentration of O2 in a flowing mixture of nitrogen and oxygen that will support flaming burning of plastics. The correlation with burning characteristics under actual use conditions are not oblique. In this test procedure, the samples are subjected to one or more sets of test conditions. If different test conditions are surrogate or the end situations are changed, it is not possible to predict changes in the fire test response characteristics measured. Hence, the results are applicable only for the fire test-exposure conditions as described in the test method.
