Test the Scratch Hardness Resistance of Coating Layer

Test the Scratch Hardness Resistance of Coating Layer

The coating layer is an important aspect of Metal components. It delivers protection against moisture, weathering conditions, contamination, oxidation, corrosion etc. It is important to test the material for its resistance against scratch hardness. Manufacturer who are responsible enough to test the scratch hardness assure the maximum quality to its customer and will maintain its brand reputation as well. By evaluating the coating quality one can assure its thickness and spreading quality. It adhesion bond can also be evaluated with the same.

Scratch Hardness Tester – Motorised is a hi-tech material testing equipment used for testing the scratch resistance of a coating layer on applied load. It complies with ASTM G171-03 testing standard and delivers accurate results with automated functions.

The machine is equipped with a motorized oscillating arm having Teflon rollers for reducing friction and a noise free testing process. Long-run performance assured with advanced electronical control. The applied load is uniformly adjusted within a specified diameter.  Steel clamping pins are installed to hold the specimen firmly. It is operated using Cam system with oscillating arm motion. The machine offers an Instant braking system, so that the test cycle can be stopped exactly at the point required. A light is fitted on the device to notify any sample failure.

The Testing specimen is placed on the platform and positioned properly. After this they are clipped using the metal pins to ensure zero slippage during the test cycle. The diamond stylus tip area is loaded with extra weights. There are different types of loads offered with the equipment as per testing requirements (1kg, 500gm, 300gm, 200gm). Then using a single button, the user can start the test. Once the specimen is scratched, the light will be switched on and indicate the same.

Post this, one can repeat the test with different loads or can repeat the cycle on a fresh sample to check the accuracy and consistency of results. The sample size must be of 130×70 mm.
