Ash determination test is performed on the materials to determine to ascertain the actual percentage of filler contents in rubbers. It cannot identify the percentage in multi-filled materials without performing any other type of test. Ash content is used to measure the amount of carbon fiber or carbon black content in the material after burning the material at very high temperature. How can Ash Test be performed?
An Ash test can be performed by following a test procedure. The test involves a known weight of sample which is placed in dry and pre-weighed crucible that burn the sample in the air atmosphere at temperature more than 500 Degree Celsius. After the test, the sample is cooled down and ash content is then weighed along with the crucible to determine the percentage of ash residue that considers the amount of fillers in the sample. Residue of less than 1% is the results of additives that did not burnt even at high temperatures.
Output after commencing Ash test
The test result is then expressed as %ash. After the % ash, the residue is then examined with a magnified optical system that explains whether the residue is of glass, mineral, or combination of both. The percentage of ash content is hence calculates as weight of ash divided by weight of original sample multiplied by 100%.
