Importance of Ozone Chamber in Testing Rubber Cracking

When the ozone environment comes in contact with any rubber material, it reacts with the double and triple chemical bonds causing rubber cracking that commonly appears on the surface of few rubber products. The most common types of rubber that tend to get affected by ozone are Natural rubber, Polybutadiene, Styrene-butadiene rubber and Nitrile rubber.

A good rubber material which is molded or extruded must be proficient enough to resist the ozone effects and outdoor weathering for satisfactory utilization. Hence, ozone testing of rubber plays an important role in deciding the quality of the sample. This test simulates the exact ozone conditions inside an ozone chamber to conduct the accelerated aging process of the rubber and validity estimation of the sample. The test results help the manufacturer in evaluating a reasonable warranty time for the customers.

During the test, a uniform ozone atmosphere must be developed inside the chamber. All sections of the sample should be exposed to the ozone. The test must be conducted at a controlled temperature. The time of exposure to ozone depends on the agreement fixed between the seller and purchaser but 1-3 days tests are commonly conducted.
