Factors That Affect Abrasion Resistance of Rubber And How To Test It

Abrasion resistance of material is the ability of resistance to resist any rupture on its surface when it is subjected to rubbing, scraping or any other sort of erosive forces. The process of abrasion involves the removal of very tiny particles from the surface of a material when it is subjected to extensive abrasion. The rubber is a material that experiences extensive abrasion when in use. Abrasion is one of the most common reasons for the failure of rubber products.

The abrasion resistance of the rubber products is dependent on many different factors. Controlling these factors can help the manufacturers in easily controlling the amount of abrasion that is experienced by the materials.

Process of vulcanization

The vulcanization is the process through which natural rubber is turned into industrial rubber. This is done by adding sulphur to the natural rubber. Once the rubber undergoes the process of vulcanization, the properties of the rubber such as hardness, abrasion resistance, tensile strength, etc. The change in the properties depends on the amount of sulphur that is added to the natural rubber. This has a great impact on the abrasion resistance of the products.

Plasticizers

Plasticizers are used in rubber products to given them reduced hardness after vulcanization. The addition of plasticizers is done for ensuring that the final products have the desired level of hardness. The addition of plasticizers is also a major factor that affects the abrasion resistance of the rubber products.

The abrasion testing is done to determine the amount of resistance that the products offer to the abrasion of the surface. The abrasion of the products is done with the help an instrument called DIN abrasion tester. The instrument is very helpful in determining the abrasion resistance of the products with great accuracy.

The abrasion of the sample is tested by measuring the weight of the sample before testing. After that, the sample is loaded into the sample holder of the machine. On the instrument, there is a rotating cylindrical drum that holds the abrasive. This abrasive is moved in a rotational motion, and the sample moves on the abrasive in a linear motion. This causes abrasion of the sample. Once the test cycle is completed, the sample is removed from the sample holder, and the weight of the sample is measured again. The difference in the weight of the sample before and after the testing helps in calculating the abrasion resistance of the sample.
