In the manufacturing of plastic Bottles different types of plastic polymers are used according to the physical and chemical property of polymer. There are different types of polymer available with different physical and chemical property which is used in the manufacturing of Bottle according to the demand customer.
High Density Polyethylene (HDPE):- This material is economic, impact resistance and provide a good moisture resistance. HDPE Bottle is used to store acids and caustics while it can not be used to store solvents. HDPE is translucent and flexible. With the help of color addition the polymer can be make opaque. The polymer can be used for silk screen decoration. Bottle made from polymer store the products below freezing point and upper temperature limit is 160?F. It can not be used to store the product below atmospheric pressure.
Low Density Polymer(LDPE):- LDPE is less rigid and more translucent than HDPE. The polymer is good for squeeze application. Compare to HDPE, LDPE is more expensive.
Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET or Polyester):- This is generally used for the storage of carbonated beverage, water bottle and food products. The polymer is used to make alcohol and oil container. This is also good for chemicals excluding acetones and ketones and has good impact resistance and tensile strength. The maximum temperature limit for the PET bottle is200?F (93?C).
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC):-It has good resistance to oil, so PVC containers are used to store salad oil, mineral oil and beverage. The polymer has low oxygen transmission. It has excellent resistance to most gases.
When high density polyethylene was introduced. They quickly became popular among manufacturers and customers due to their light weight and low production cost compare with glass bottle. Now a days all kind of beverage industries, water industry use plastic bottle. Excluding wine and beer industry the food industry has fully replaced the glass bottles.
